SUMMARY OF RIDING:
VA Highlands (Grayson Highlands and Mount Rogers):
- Wild Ponies!!!!
- Technical Rocky Slow Speed Trails
- Some of the most magnificent views I’ve seen on the East Coast
The region is not great for high speed riding due to the rocky terrain - it’s literally like riding our West in the Rocky Mountains. But there are some limited spaces where you can follow wild pony trails and get some trots or canters in. Gaited horses do well in this terrain.
Moses Cone:
- beautiful plantation and working farm
- carriage roads with gentle inclines and switch backs
- fire tower at the top of the mountain
- busy park but lots of opportunities for a canter or a gallop
Carvins Cove:
- lots of great single track roads with lots of ups and downs
- mountain climbs
- river level meandering trails in pine forests
- a lot of really good trotting paths as well as canter hills
We have three housing options for this trip:
RUGBY CREEK CABIN RENTALS:
Rugby Creek offers two cabin options, the Mountain Top Cabin and the Stable Loft as well as paddocks for our horses overnight. These comfortable cabins offer us the opportunity to sleep in comfort while our horses get turnout in the pastures to relax. It is a 6 mile, 20 minute drive from the cabins to the trail head each morning.
The Mountain Top Cabin is an absolutely stunning cabin on the edge of the mountain overlooking misty valleys below. It is newly built with an epic wrap around porch to take in the view. The downstairs has two bedrooms with a king and a queen size bed, as well as a pull out couch. The upstairs has a king size bed and another couch.
The Stable Loft is located just across from the horse paddocks and is perfect for anyone who wants the comfort of a cabin but the convenience of being directly next to their horse. It has a king size bed as well as a pull out couch.
GRAYSON HIGHLANDS CAMPING
Grayson Highlands State Park has an equine campground with campsites and stalls available for our horses. The campground is where we plan to base our rides each day. The campground has a bathhouse with showers as well on site.
Campers will each be welcome to set up their own tent for camping in the reserved campsites (tents available for rent for $35). Meals will be served at Rugby Creek each night so that people can have a comfortable place to eat, no matter the weather.
Because those who are camping do not have to commute, they get extra ride time each morning with an early morning ride (60-90 minutes) before the cabin crew arrives for the daily long trek.
BYO HORSESBYO Horses are welcome depending on herd and rider dynamics, for safety. BYO Horse Discount of $50/day. Rules on bringing your own horse at: https://equitravels.com/travel-rules-requirements/travel-with-your-horse/
Trailer Your Own Horse & BYO Supplies Discount of additional $60/day
Please be sure your horse is capable of climbing the mountain and has appropriate footwear on all four feet for this trip.
